Stage 1. Research in relation with Sara Fanelli (the illustrator of my children´s book)

Kveta Pacovska

(born June 10, 1928) is an 84 year old artist and illustrator. She majored in Graphic Art in the Prague School of Applied Arts and mainly worked in graphics, conceptual art and artist book fields. She won the biennial, international Hans Christian Andersen Award for Illustration in 1992, recognizing her “lasting contribution to children’s literature”. Her picture books still captivate children’s minds of all over the world with fantastic color combining, geometrical composition and unique stereoscopic beauty. (by: fishinkblog)

Stage 1. Research of my object: 2.Sara Fanelli´s book

As I said in an earlier post, in this occasion we need to investigate our object in more detail and research: the maker, other contexts in which this maker has worked, similar work made by other people.

My second artefact:
2. Children´s book by Phaidon.
Illustrator: Sara Fanelli (www.sarafanelli.com)

Sara Fanelli is one of the world's most distinctive and idiosyncratic picture book creators. Born and raised in Florence, she now lives in north London. Her acclaimed title Dear Diary received an Honourable Mention from the 2001 Bologna Ragazzi Award Jury. Sara's interpretation of Carlo Collodi's Pinocchio won the best overall prize in the V&A Illustration Awards and the First Prize in the Book Cover and Jacket Illustration Prize category in 2004. Pinocchio also won the British Book Design and Production Award in the children's category. Sara was also awarded an RDI Honorary Fellowship in 2006, the very first woman illustrator to have ever received the honour. SARA FANELLI

I don't remember when I discovered A. Fanelli's work. But I love it! I am a big fan of her and I have a lot of her books. I love how she mix textures, caligraphy... and how she creates her characters!
I really like her collage style. Simply, I love to watch her work because I get excited when I watch it. She has a strong style, very particular, naif and children´s style.  Even I remember the first time that I went to the Tate modern in London, and I saw her caligraphy in the walls, indicating the artists in the gallery. Amazing!

Stage 1. Research of my object: 1.Tomato´s sauce tag

In this occasion we need to investigate our object in more detail and research: the maker, other contexts in which this maker has worked, similar work made by other people.

1. Tomato´ sauce tag by Waitrose.
Illustrator: Emma Dibben (www.emmadibben.com)

EMMA DIBBEN

Emma is an amazing local illustrator. I discovered her when I was buying this tomato sauce can.
I saw this can and also other products, in this supermarket, with the same illustration style. So I typed on Google "Waitrose illustrations" and I discovered her work.

She studied Illustration at Falmouth College of Arts. This included a term studying etching and stone lithography at The Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw. Whilst working on both reportage and editorial projects she discovered her love of still life and food illustration.
On graduating in 2004, with a First Class BA (Hons) Degree in Illustration, Emma upped sticks and moved to Bristol. Commissions soon followed and saw her creating images for prestigious clients including Waitrose, The Guardian and the BBC.

Sketches:

I really like this illustrator by several reasons.
The biggest reason is her spontaneous, delicate and fresh lines. She represents the food in a realistic way, but at the same time with a fun and attractive touch.
Also I like that most of her illustrations are for an adult public, but have a children´s touch.

Even I contacted her by email and she was really nice!
